BREAKING: No interim bail for Hemant Soren as Supreme Court gives ED time to file reply

FollowThe Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Enforcement Directorate to respond by May 17 to a petition filed by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and former chief minister Hemant Soren contesting his detention in a money laundering case relating to an alleged land scam.
A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta, which was originally scheduled to hear the case on May 20, had to reschedule the date to May 17 when senior counsel Kapil Sibal stated that the polls would have ended by then and that he would be prejudiced if the lengthy date was allowed in the case.
”My case is covered by Arvind Kejriwal’s order and I need bail for election campaigning,” Sibal told the bench. The bench said this week it is too much work and a lot of matters are listed.
It expressed an unwillingness to move the date from May 20, but when Sibal and senior attorney Arunabh Chowdhury, representing Soren, persisted in their plea, the date was modified to May 17. "We don't know whether we will be able to take up the matter but still we are posting it for May 17," the judge stated.
Soren's suit challenged the Jharkhand High Court's May 3 ruling rejecting his case against arrest. He had also requested interim release to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections till the court ruled on his petition against arrest.
Kejriwal was on May 10 granted interim bail by the top court for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls. He was arrested in a money laundering case related to an alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
